Magazine Analysis

Magazine analysis

The three house style colours denoted are orange, blue and black. The orange is used in a sans serif bold font for the masthead in capitals. This makes the magazine easy to read and the headline eye catching when browsing through magazines to buy. It also helps to establish the brand and connotes importance. The orange also connotes positivity because of how bright it is which is important in the sport genre. The blue is used as the background to denote a beach scene which challenges the stereotype that running is boring. It is also used within the banner to advertise the ‘free’ advice you are getting on shoes from another brand. This is synergy. The word ‘bonus’ is in black to denote what you are getting free and is also used in two of the cover lines to show the importance of them.

The main cover image takes up most of the page and relates to the masthead of the magazine. This connotes the importance of the runner and helps to establish what the magazine will be about. The cover image is of a physically fit and attractive lady running which according to Carl Rodgers makes the reader feel like she is their role model and that she is their ideal self. This would make someone browsing for a sport magazine want to buy it in the hope they could read it and find out how to look like her. She isn’t looking at the camera but has a smile on her face and is in full stride which connotes confidence. The shot type is a wide shot because you can see her full body. The magazine is aimed at women who want to improve their fitness or have a big interest in keeping fit, especially by running. We know this because of the title of the magazine and the feminine colours used as well as a female model.

The magazine features cover lines which work as a form of cell line to advertise what is inside the magazine which connotes excitement for the reader. The cover lines fit the magazines genre. The most important cover line is in a large black font to connote importance and is in a sans serif font which is capitalised. It is pinned to the main cover image of the runner. It is personalised to you because of the word ‘your’. This represents the brand. There is a cover image on the left hand side inside a pug graphic with a rhetorical question inside to entice the reader to that page.
