Magazine Analysis-contents page

Contents

The Masthead of the contents page is in a white sans serif font in a black block of colour at the top of the page on the left hand side. The text is in capital letters and a large bold font also which makes the masthead eye catching and the first thing you see, especially with it being in the top left corner as this is where your eyes are drawn because of where you read from. This connotes the importance of what is on this page. Next to the header in a graphic called a plug is the month the edition is for. ‘October 2017’. This lets the audience know which edition of the magazine they’re reading so they know whether they’re up to date. The contents page is always page two of your magazine because it features all the key information in the magazine and where to find it such as the articles on injury and nutrition. The contents page will always have a consistent house style to the front cover. In order to make the house style consistent the contents page for my magazine is blue black and white which makes it striking to the audience of runners and helps reinforce the brand. The colours black and white connote professionalism which will make more people want to buy the magazine therefore creating more of a profit. The colour blue is anchored to the front pages writing ‘the shoe buyers guide’ as underneath the masthead is an explanation about the right shoe and which page you can access it.

The images that are denoted straight away on the contents page are of branded running shoes. This is a stereotype of a sports magazine because the producers are presuming that without expensive shoes you cannot run. This is advertised the most because company’s will be paying to use that space so they make more of a profit on shoes as well. This does however, connote the importance of a good shoe. This also connotes that the audience reading the magazine have a lot of disposable income to spend on shoes. On the next page the different parts of the magazine are split into categories based on different features such as warm ups and what to eat which are under subheadings. These help organise the articles so the audience can choose what they want to read. These are only 3 or 4 words because these cut down on space and make the magazine neater. Next to these are cartoon graphics of what the section is about such as the picture of a dog which is anchored to ‘Taking the lead’ and a picture of a blueberry which is anchored to ‘Berried Treasure’. This helps establish what the section is going to be talking about which helps the audience decide if they want to read that section and also connotes the little things that arnt associated with running. The editor has a section which includes his picture which makes the magazine seem more personal. This also helps you put a name to a face and connotes that he is proud of his work.

Down the side of the contents page in a banner is a range of adverts for the magazines website which promotes the brand even more because more and more people use the internet now meaning it reaches a larger audience. Furthermore, there is also an audience write in section which helps the reader feel in touch with the magazine and make them want to continue buying it.
